Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) Plant at Bokaro Steel Plant: A Success Story
In a remarkable stride towards sustainable industrial practices, Bokaro Steel Plant has
commissioned a state-of-the-art Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) plant, operational
since October 2020. This advanced facility, designed and executed by M/s S.R.
Paryavaran Engineers Pvt Ltd., exemplifies cutting-edge technology in wastewater
treatment and resource recovery.
Project Overview
To address the stringent environmental regulations and the need for efficient water
management, Bokaro Steel Plant awarded the contract for the Tertiary Treatment
Plant Complex for their CRM III facility to M/s S.R. Paryavaran Engineers Pvt
Ltd., our principals. The plant boasts two streams, each with a capacity of 110m³/hr
(2.64 MLD), ensuring a robust and reliable water treatment process.
Advanced System Design and Components
The ZLD plant incorporates several critical components designed to optimize water
treatment and resource recovery:
- Ultra Filtration (UF) and Reverse Osmosis (RO) Units: The UF and RO units, each with a capacity of 110m³/hr (2.64 MLD), form the backbone of the water purification process, significantly reducing contaminants and ensuring high-quality water output.
- Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) System: The ZLD system, with a capacity of 11m³/hr (0.264 MLD), integrates Mechanical Vapor Recompression (MVR), Multi-Effect Evaporation (MEE), and Agitated Thin Film Dryer (ATFD) technologies. This comprehensive system ensures that no liquid waste is discharged, aligning with stringent environmental norms.
- Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) System: For efficient operation and monitoring, a SCADA system has been installed. This system utilizes various instruments and analyzing equipment to control and gather real-time data, which is then centralized in a control room for continuous monitoring and decision-making.
Implementation and Operational Excellence
Since its commissioning in October 2020, the ZLD plant has been successfully operating, delivering exceptional performance and sustainability. Key highlights include:
- Efficient Water Treatment: The plant effectively treats industrial wastewater, ensuring it meets stringent quality standards for reuse in the plant’s processes.
- Sustainability: The integration of the ZLD system ensures that all wastewater is treated and reused, significantly reducing the environmental impact and conserving water resources.
- Operational Efficiency: The SCADA system enhances the plant’s operational efficiency by providing real-time data and control, ensuring smooth and continuous operations.
The Journey to a Sustainable Future
The Tertiary Treatment Plant Complex for CRM III at Bokaro Steel Plant is a
testament to the successful implementation of advanced water treatment
technologies. The collaboration with M/s S.R. Paryavaran Engineers Pvt Ltd. has
resulted in a highly efficient and sustainable water treatment solution, reflecting the
plant’s commitment to environmental stewardship and operational excellence.
By leveraging cutting-edge technologies such as UF, RO, MVR, MEE, and ATFD, combined with a sophisticated SCADA system, Bokaro Steel Plant has set a benchmark in industrial water management.
